For people who aren’t inclined or able to take on an in-person role like Paul, we design additional roles that people can fulfill online. Hundreds of people in dozens of volunteer teams support critical functions of Sunrise. A few examples: the data entry team, which enters and manages data to support hubs to reach the people they are organizing quickly and efficiently; the texting and phone-banking teams, which communicate key information across the movement; and the inbox team, which makes sure organizers in the movement get their questions answered and get the support they need in order to do their jobs.

Sunrise has always been rooted in the belief that transformative change comes from the power of everyday people doing what they can from where they are. No organization or network of organizations can ever pay all the people we need to make a Green New Deal the road map for our country, and it’s the contributions of volunteers that sustain the movement and power it to be stronger each day.

Distributed organizing taps into a courage that says, Maybe I can do something—maybe I can call my representative or text five friends or host a house party—and maybe, with a few of my friends, we can participate in a movement to shape the course of history.

This little spark of courage is what we activated in ourselves when we started Sunrise, and it’s what we encourage and invite from everyone who makes the movement their own today. Everyone is welcome, and anyone can make change. If you share the goal and vision of the Sunrise Movement in your heart and you follow the principles of the movement, you can act in the name of the movement and claim the movement as your own as much as anyone who has been in it before you.

Sunrise Principle #11: We shine bright. There are hard and sad days, to be sure. This isn’t easy work. But we strive to bring a spirit of positivity and hope to everything we do. Changing the world is a fulfilling and joyful process, and we let that show.
